CPD explained

Keep learning.
Keep improving.

Continuing Professional Development helps you build knowledge, reflect on experience and improve the way you work.

Learning throughout your career

What is CPD?

CPD means Continuing Professional Development. It is the ongoing learning you undertake to keep your knowledge relevant and develop your professional practice.

A course or webinar can be part of that learning, as can focused reading, technical discussions and reflection on experience. What matters is identifying a need, learning purposefully and considering how you will use what you have learned.

In construction, that might mean improving an inspection method, understanding a specification or recognising when to seek specialist advice.

A learning journal and construction notes ready for reflection

Reflect on what changed

Record what you learned, how it relates to your work and the action you will take next.

Make learning purposeful

From a learning need
to a change in practice.

01

Identify a need

Choose a gap in your knowledge or a task you want to perform more effectively.

02

Choose your learning

Select a relevant activity and decide what you want to get from it.

03

Record and reflect

Keep evidence and describe the main learning points in your own words.

04

Apply and review

Put the learning into practice and identify any further development needed.

Construction in practice

What meaningful CPD can look like.

Illustrative learning examples, not a list of accredited courses.

01

Before an inspection

Study the relevant specification, attend a technical briefing and identify the evidence you will need to check on site.

02

After a recurring defect

Review why it happened, discuss the findings with a competent specialist and use the learning to improve future inspection planning.

03

When your role changes

Identify the knowledge needed for new responsibilities and plan learning before taking on work beyond your current capability.

04

When guidance changes

Read the source material, note the scope of the change and consider its implications for your work and project information.

Capture the learning.
Not just the attendance.

Record the activity, date, provider and actual learning time. Keep relevant evidence, then explain what you learned and how it will influence your work.

Check your professional body’s requirements for eligible activities and recording hours. A certificate is useful evidence of participation; your reflection explains the value.

Learning & recognition

Understand the distinction.

What is ACQP CPD accreditation?

ACQP reviews a defined learning activity for educational value, relevance and quality within construction and the built environment. Approval relates to the CPD content and scope reviewed. It is not a qualification, a licence to practise or certification of a construction product.

Does CPD accreditation prove someone is competent?

CPD supports professional development. Completing a learning activity alone does not establish occupational competence. Competence depends on the relevant knowledge, skills, experience and behaviours, together with any assessment required for the person’s role.

Give your expertise the recognition it deserves.
