About this course
Organisations operating water systems must identify and assess foreseeable Legionella risks, implement appropriate control measures, monitor their effectiveness and maintain suitable records. Where a significant risk exists, a competent person, commonly referred to as the responsible person, should be formally appointed to manage and oversee the control scheme.
This two-day course provides responsible persons, deputies and dutyholders with the management knowledge required to oversee Legionella controls across hot and cold water services, evaporative cooling systems and other risk systems.
The course examines the responsibilities placed on employers and people in control of premises under health and safety legislation. It explains how to review a Legionella risk assessment, implement a written control scheme, define responsibilities, verify monitoring activities, manage specialist contractors and respond when results fall outside the required control limits.
A substantial section of the course is dedicated to cooling towers and evaporative condensers. Delegates will examine the operation of evaporative cooling systems, water-treatment programmes, microbiological control, corrosion, scale, fouling, inspections, cleaning, disinfection, shutdowns and emergency procedures.
The course reflects the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice L8 and HSG274, including the revised technical guidance for evaporative cooling systems. HSE ACOP L8, HSE HSG274 guidance
